Abstract:

Solid oxide cells (SOCs) are highly efficient electrochemical device to operate between solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) mode to store the surplus electrical energy into chemical energy of fuels and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) mode to convert the chemical energy of fuels into electrical energy. One barrier of developing durable SOCs is the substantial performance degradation due to the attack of oxygen electrodes by volatile contaminants. In this report, we will present our fundamental understanding of the deposition and poisoning of boron species from borosilicate glass sealant on the electrocatalytic activity and stability of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM) oxygen electrodes of SOCs. Under both SOFC and SOEC operating conditions, there is preferential boron deposition at the oxygen electrode/electrolyte interface, forming lanthanum borate and manganese oxide. The boron deposition leads to the significant loss of electrocatalytic activity of LSM electrode, but also accelerates the delamination of LSM electrode in the SOEC mode. We proposed that the increased activity of the highly energetic lanthanum at the LSM lattice sites at the three-phase boundary region, i.e. the electrode/electrolyte interface enhances the reaction rate between the boron species and the energetic lanthanum.
